The Tradition of the Chief Petty Officer Hat Box

The Tradition of the Chief Petty Officer Hat Box[1]

After 21 years of service in the United States Coast Guard, it’s no wonder that many of my creations are inspired by my time in the military. Sometimes, I’m lucky enough to lend my woodworking skills to the men and women who are actively serving our country.

One of my favorite projects to work on is one that is close to my own heart: the Chief Petty Officer Hatbox. It isn’t an easy project by any means — these hat boxes usually take me four to six weeks just to craft, even longer if we bring epoxy into the mix — but knowing that the finished piece will mark such a momentous occasion in a service member’s life makes it well worth the effort.

What is a Chief Petty Officer hat box?
In the Coast Guard and the Navy, when a Petty Officer First Class (also known as an E-6) meets the correct qualifications, they advance to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. Often referred to as E-7 or simply CPO, those earning the title of Chief Petty Officer go through a traditional induction process called the Chief’s Call to Initiation (CCTI). There are a number of rituals involved in the CCTI, but during one small, meaningful part of the ceremony, each freshly minted Chief Petty Officer presents a hat box.

Though a Chief Petty Officer’s hat box does exactly what the name suggests, it is also an extremely personal and emblematic item — far more than just a boring, old place to keep the Chief’s hat safe from the elements. Typically made of wood, a Chief Petty Officer’s hat box features ornate, personalized designs and lettering meant to represent their career and who they are.

Not only is the Chief Petty Officer hat box a great place to keep an important part of your uniform safe, it is a celebration of your achievements that will be loved by your family for generations to come.

Why is the Chief Petty Officer hat box a tradition in the Coast Guard and Navy?

Like many other aspects of the military, the Chief Petty Officer hat box is a tradition steeped in mystery. This isn’t necessarily because it’s intended to be kept secret from the public, but because many historical records have been lost over the years. Still, the Chief’s Call to Initiation is a largely private ceremony, so there are many aspects known only to those who have been through it themselves.

That being said, modern military traditions give us a hint as to why the Chief Petty Officer hat box is so significant.

First, hats or “covers” are extremely important in the military and there are many rules around who can wear what hat and when. Those who have served are easily able to differentiate other service members in full dress uniform by their headwear because hats are often used to signify the wearer’s rank. For civilians without full knowledge of the rank associated with them, the hats worn by the Coast Guard and Navy are still immediately recognizable. They represent safety, protection, courage, and honor.

Service members are taught to respect their uniform and keep it tidy and presentable at all times. This can be difficult, especially for tough to clean hats like the iconic stark white ones worn in our nation’s seagoing services. In the days before dry cleaning, a hat box was essential in the fight for a properly clean uniform. Even now, a hat box is a useful tool that protects a Chief’s hat from the elements and keeps it in good shape for years after their retirement.

Second, earning the rank of Chief Petty Officer is no small feat and is considered to be one of the most significant promotions in both the Coast Guard and the Navy. Becoming a CPO requires many years of service and the fulfillment of a number of demanding requirements, before going through the Chief’s Call of Initiation, a weeks-long process where each prospective candidate is thoroughly tested and prepared to make the switch into an essential leadership position.

The CCTI becomes a celebration, commemorating the candidate’s past and future achievements. Now, bearing the insignia of a Chief, the Chief Petty Officer is an expert leader and mentor of the people placed in their charge.

Even sweeter, the Chief Petty Officer hat box is traditionally crafted by the new CPO’s team and given to them as a gift to show their pride and appreciation.

This is why the Chief Petty Officer hat box has become such an honored tradition in the United States military. Sure, it serves as a physical representation of their achievements and keeps their fancy new hat safe and sound, but more importantly, it’s a labor of love.

Past and Present: the modern Chief Petty Officer hat box

Though wood has been used for projects for ages, it wasn’t always the first choice for the Chief Petty Officer hat box.

In the olden days, the majority of military hat boxes were made entirely out of metal, usually tin. Unfortunately, tin is relatively weak and highly susceptible to oxidation — most of the vintage military hat boxes you see today appear to be completely rusted over. As you can imagine, this likely resulted in many Chief Petty Officer hats being damaged over the years.

For those that had the means, leather hat boxes were a popular alternative to tin. Leather Chief Petty Officer hat boxes often looked similar to a briefcase or picnic basket, with small, metal fasteners. Though stylish, leather presents its own issues, as it must be dutifully cared for and conditioned regularly, otherwise it will degrade beyond repair.

Surprisingly, it was the need for personalization that gave rise to the wooden Chief Petty Officer hat boxes that are common today, like the ones I make.

There are few regulation-approved ways for service members to customize their uniforms, but where they store their uniform is a different matter entirely. Since Chief Petty Officer hat boxes are such a personal, sentimental gift, the highly customizable and durable nature of wood made it the perfect choice.

Just like in the olden days, my Chief Petty Officer hat boxes are a labor of love. Customizable down to the detail, I make sure that the hat boxes I make will be an absolute point of honor for the Chief in your life and will be cherished for years to come. It’s a tradition that’s very close to my heart, so if you’re looking for a custom Chief Petty Officer hat box, I would love to make one for you.
